The Department of Visual Communication Design was established in response to Taiwan's long-term development trends and talent demands in the cultural and creative industries, design industry, and digital content sector. The department aligns with the university’s mission to cultivate professionals with a strong foundation in humanities, technology, innovation, and global vision, as well as the College of Digital Design’s goal of nurturing a new generation of digital design talents with creativity, aesthetics, and technological literacy.
Through a comprehensive analysis of industry trends, talent demands, and the strategic objectives of the department, college, and university, the department has defined its core mission as:
"Cultivating design professionals to meet industry demands and advancing cultural and creative research and development."
Currently, the department comprises three specialized tracks:
- Visual Branding & Commercial Design Track
- Digital Animation & Motion Design Track
- Innovative Lifestyle & Experience Design Track

Faculty & Staff
The department consists of 19 full-time faculty members and 17 part-time faculty members, each specializing in diverse fields. Faculty members are grouped according to their expertise, ensuring specialized instruction across different tracks:
- Professors specializing in branding, packaging, and advertising are assigned to the Commercial Design Track.
- Experts in 2D animation, 3D animation, and stop-motion animation are part of the Animation Design Track.
- Faculty focusing on cultural and creative industries, local resource research, and craft design are placed in the Creative Lifestyle Design Track.
A key feature of our program is its interdisciplinary flexibility—students are encouraged to take cross-track courses, allowing them to broaden their knowledge and develop diverse skills beyond their primary focus.

The Master’s Program in the Department of Visual Communication Design is built upon design theory, supplemented by practical applications in design execution. It prepares students to excel in strategic thinking, critical evaluation, and professional leadership in the fields of design innovation and research.

Note:
- Minimum course credits for the Master's degree are 26, including 8 required and 18 elective course credits. In addition, a thesis of 6 credits is mandatory.
- Students take professional elective courses from this department to obtain at least 18 elective course credits.
- Course credits obtained outside the department may be counted only if they are approved by his/her advisor and the department chair. The credits are recognized as the master program elective credits of VCD department and the maximum is 3 credits.
- Each graduate student must publish at least a paper submitted to a refereed conference or journal before applying for oral defense of thesis.
